Located in the heart of Suffolk, a glamping holiday at Maglia Rosso means you have easy access to the large number of historic villages and charming market towns in the area around our glamping site. Located in the village of Hawstead, the Maglia Rosso glamping site means you can easily enjoy our cycle centre and cafe, but there is also lots to do in the surrounding Suffolk countryside.
The historic town of Bury St Edmunds is located just four miles from our camping pods and has plenty to offer for a great day out. Here, you can visit the ruins of the old abbey, once a hugely popular destination for medieval pilgrimage and the meeting place to discuss the clauses that would make up the Magna Carta.
Other sites of historical interest in the town include the Abbey Gardens, the newly renovated medieval civic building of Guildhall and the Bury St Edmunds Cathedral with its tower offering nice views over the area.
Apart from historical attractions Bury St Edmunds also offers memorable experiences for foodies. The town hosts a biweekly market and is home to restaurants offering ample opportunities for fine dining. For something slightly different, you can tour the Greene King Brewery, home to refreshing favourites like Belhaven and Old Speckled Hen. The town also has two cinemas, a roller-skating and indoor play centre as well as several theatres to offer entertainment on rainy days.
The village of Lavenham, some 12 miles from our glamping site, is home to hundreds of listed buildings - including a phone booth. A leisurely stroll through this medieval village takes you past a number of pretty half-timbered buildings, one of which was featured in Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows. The village is also home to a magnificent church, while the nearby Lavenham Brook Farm showcases the best of Suffolk produce, including a range of award-winning wines. Historic Lavenham is just 12 miles away, as is Clare, and Newmarket with its world-famous horse-racing connections at a similar distance.
Set on an archaeological site, the West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village offers educational fun for the whole family. Located 12 miles from our campsite, this interactive attraction lets you experience life back in the fifth to seventh century AD. You can dress in clothes similar to those worn by the Anglo-Saxons, get acquainted with some rare chicken and pig breeds and explore the eight reconstructed buildings that make up the village.
The village also has a woodland trail that introduces kids and those young at heart to the saga of Beowulf and Grendel and a play park complete with picnic benches for some al fresco dining.
The name of this charming Suffolk village comes from the words ‘mill and ‘ford’ - as well as its exceptionally long main street, measuring 2.5 miles. Walking down this street, you’ll pass the 15th century Holy Trinity church as well as a host of beautiful houses from the Tudor, Elizabethan, Georgian and Queen Anne eras. This short walk offers a lot to lovers of historical British architecture. The Tudor-era Kentwell Hall and its garden, recreated in the modern day to reflect its former glory, are also well worth a visit.
Apart from its beautiful buildings, Long Melford is known as a great hub for antiques and art galleries and you can make some excellent finds in the village. Places like the Jessica Muir Gallery are known for offering good value for money on works by local artists and artisans. Meanwhile, you can make rare finds in antique shops like the Long Melford Antiques Centre. In the summer, Long Melford is also home to open-air concerts, plays and village fetes that add a unique twist to a day out in this picturesque village 9 miles from our glamping site.
You can enjoy a number of outdoor adventures at Thetford Forest HIgh Lodge. From Segways to Go Ape adventures you can spend more than a day wandering a choice of 4 walking trails or 3 cycling trails, trying archery or having fun on the large play areas. The forest is dog friendly so the whole family can enjoy a day out and take a packed lunch from our cafe or enjoy a BBQ in the forest.
From smaller children (and big kids!) in addition to the Gruffalo trail there is now a Shaun the Sheep Farmageddon Glow Trail. There are also events throughout the year including Forest Live 2020 where new artists are regularly annouced to perform in the forest - be quick as tickets sell out quickly!
